Plate 1 of 10
The body map
Vulva, clitoris, vagina: locating each area before talking about touch
Every plate that follows talks about a specific spot: the hood, the front wall, the perineum, the edges of the glans. None of them say where that is. This plate lays out the map once and for all, so the rest becomes legible.
One word comes up everywhere and almost always means something else: “vagina.” The vagina is the internal canal. What you see from the outside is the vulva — and that's where most of what our plates describe actually happens. These descriptions apply to an intact vulva: after excision (female genital cutting), the external anatomy is altered, but much of the clitoris, being internal, remains.
The outer lips form the outer contour, covered in skin (with hair after puberty). The inner lips, on the inside, are a fold of thin, hairless skin that becomes mucous membrane on the vestibule side; they have a rich nerve supply. Their size and symmetry vary enormously.
In this plate
